ZX TM is a nacelle-mounted Lidar that uses continuous wave technology to measure the full shear and veer wind profile across a turbine. The remote sensing device has been successfully evaluated by DNV, an independent engineering firm, and UL, a global safety science leader, to support wind turbine power performance evaluations.

This technology aims to minimize measurement uncertainty via its availability and sampling rates. In addition to power performance testing, ZX TM is also suitable for nacelle transfer function calibration, including yaw alignment and wake detection.

Working with DNV and UL, NRG Systems, will provide ZX TM as part of a turnkey solution that includes installation, field support and data management, with the option to calibrate using an IEC-compliant mast at UL’s test site in the United States or DNV’s test site in Janneby, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

“NRG Systems is always working to push the boundaries in wind technology,” said Gregory Erdmann, VP of global sales at NRG. “We have been doing it for 40 years and we are very selective in which technology we develop or partner with to offer the best possible solution. As the wind industry continues to evolve, that means providing cutting-edge technologies to optimize each stage of development and operation. We are excited to be broadening our relationship with ZX Lidars as well as building on our decade-long remote sensing experience by adding ZX TM to our turnkey wind measurement solutions.”

NRG Systems has been selling and supporting ZX Lidars’ technology since 2019, offering the ZX 300 onshore vertical profiler as well as ZX 300M for near-shore or platform-based offshore applications. The product portfolio is further supported by the ZX North American Service Center operated by NRG Systems.

“Our team installed the first nacelle-mounted Lidar in 2003. Today, we support clients globally with operational wind farm measurements, understanding what wind turbines actually see once constructed,” said Ian Locker, managing director of ZX Lidars. “Combining the unique measurements of ZX TM, with the customer support, care and attention from NRG Systems is a great partnership. Approved for use by DNV and UL, clients can be confident in their choice of Lidar and are in great hands in-country with NRG Systems.”

NRG Systems, Inc. has announced that Red Horse 2 in Cochise County, Arizona, has installed Bat Deterrent Systems on all 15 of its turbines. Located 80 miles east of Tucson, Arizona, Red Horse 2 is one of the first combined wind and solar projects in the United States.

Red Horse 2 is owned and operated by D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI), the first commercial adopters of NRG’s Bat Deterrent System. DESRI previously installed Bat Deterrent Systems on all 30 turbines at its Kawailoa Wind facility in Hawaii.

“After a smooth procurement and installation process at Kawailoa Wind, we are excited to be deepening our commitment to wildlife conservation, as well as our collaboration with NRG Systems, by implementing this pioneering technology at Red Horse 2,” said Bryan Martin, Chief Executive Officer for DESRI.

Brita Woeck, Environmental Compliance Officer for Red Horse 2, added: “Our goal has always been to minimize the impact of renewable energy production on surrounding habitats. By installing NRG’s Bat Deterrent Systems at Red Horse 2, we are hopeful that we can further reduce bat take at the farm.”

Energy generated at Red Horse 2 is purchased by Tucson Electric Power and is playing a key role in helping the utility achieve its goal of getting 30% of its electricity from renewables by 2030.

“DESRI has been a strong ally for us and we are eager to help them protect bats. It is exciting to see our vision of how the wind industry can play a part in bat conservation coming to life,” said Brogan Morton, Senior Product Manager at NRG Systems.

NRG Systems, Inc. announced that Evan Vogel has joined the company as president. Vogel brings more than 30 years of experience in power, energy, and renewables to his new role, most recently overseeing marketing and engineering for Schneider Electric’s Solar and Energy Storage Business.

Vogel also led Schneider’s transition from hardware focus to include a unique, cloud-connected SaaS platform that drove double-digit growth.

“I am excited to be joining NRG Systems at a truly pivotal point in the company’s trajectory,” said Vogel. “With the expansion of its solar and remote sensing products lines, growing service offerings, and the introduction of its Bat Deterrent System, NRG’s portfolio has never been more diverse. I believe my experience in solar as well as bringing exciting new technologies to market will prove valuable as we enter into this new chapter.”

Vogel, who holds a B.S.E.E. degree from New York University and MBA from Adelphi University, also served as Vice President of Marketing at Power-One, and later as the General Manager of the company’s Global Business Unit, which saw revenues of $550 million. In addition to his positions at publicly traded Fortune 500 and S&P500 listed companies, Vogel has played a key role in leading start-ups, including Ampt and Petra Solar, to market and profitability.

“I have a true passion for renewable energy,” said Vogel. “This is why I have dedicated the last fifteen years of my career to the solar market. NRG Systems’ mission is close to my heart and I look forward to learning and growing with this pioneering company.”

Vogel will move into his new role effective immediately. He replaces Justin Wheating, who retired as President of NRG Systems earlier this month.
